DIVISIVE
On February 12th and 13th, 2010, I was in Jacksonville, North Carolina working as a consultant for the United States Marine Corp. Several members of the aircraft maintenance units there were deployed or had recently returned home from Afghanistan. I wanted to take pictures but was unable to do so on the military installation. This led me to photograph my hotel room instead, which was just off base. Months later, WikiLeaks.com published thousands of leaked reports from the war in Afghanistan that were written between 2004 and 2009. I began thinking about the condition of our military, their support structures back in the states and the desensitization American culture has undergone toward war in recent decades. I paired events that were documented in the WikiLeaks reports from the same date I took these hotel room photographs and added links to news articles that were headlining during the same time. This hybrid information assemblage represents many angles of the same glass of water. Although it isn't intended to refract a particular event or person, the work does illuminate a moment in our recent history that has not been revealed to us through the filter of time.
